From the moment we released 'Sweater' to the present day, not one gig goes past where someone in the crowd doesn’t yell out “Play Sweater!!”
'Sweater' was where the whole Eskimo Joe story began. The band had started with myself and Stu playing a mix of pixies covers and originals at local cafes around our home town of Fremantle. We had a handful of songs, but it wasn’t until Joel joined the band that we thought we would try our luck at entering the campus band competition... The campus band comp was a big deal at the time in perth, because if you won the state final it meant that you got to fly to the east coast to compete in the national final - Perth back then (as it is now) is one of the most isolated capital cities in the world, so we were very keen to get the hell out and have some adventures! We ended up winning the campus band competition, and by the time we played the grand final in Brisbane at the Tivoli it was only our 4th gig. The prize was to record a four song EP at Troy Horse records in Sydney, so over the period of 3 days in 1997 we recorded the Sweater EP.
After over 20 years I can look back on this recording and time as a momentous moment in my life: this was when I became attached to the band name, my band mates, and the name Sweater forever. And although Sweater sometimes feels like an embarrassing tattoo you get when you're 18 years old, it's a tattoo that I now display proudly as a marker of where I came from and how far I’ve come - KAV
